Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell
Born 22nd February 1857. 6th son and 8th of ten children
6, Stanhope Street Paddington London.
Attended Rose Hill School in Tunbridge Wells then Charterhouse School London. Charterhouse moved to Godalming Surrey.
He played piano and violin.
He joined the army and was commissioned into the 13th Hussars
1876 he went to India. He was also stationed in the Balkans, South Africa and Malta.
He led the defence of Mafeking during the 217 day siege (Boer War) and returned to England a hero.
He first wrote "Aids to Scouting" then, in 1907 held first Scout Camp on Brownsea Island with 20 boys.
"Scouting for Boys" published in 1908 as 6 fortnightly parts
Retired from the army in 1910 aged 53.
1st International Camp in 1920 at Olympia London. It was there he was acclaimed "Chief Scout of the World"
At the 3rd Jamboree in Arrow Park Birkenhead, he became "Lord" Baden-Powell of Gilwell.
He retired to Africa in 1938 suffering from ill health
He died on 8th January 1941 aged 83.
He was buried in Nyeri near Mount Kenya.
